For your pet's safety and your peace of mind, we follow the strictest surgical guidelines, including a proactive pain management regimen to keep your pet as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

Surgical Procedures at Our Pet Hospital

Our highly skilled, experienced veterinarians perform many types of surgeries, including:

  • Spays and neuters
  • Bladder surgery
  • Tumor removal
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Cancer surgery
  • Skin surgery
  • Cesarean sections

The entire Gasow Veterinary Hospital team fully understands the decision to allow your pet to undergo surgery is never easy. To that end, we're happy to answer any questions regarding your pet's specific surgery. All patients requiring surgery will receive a pre-surgical physical exam, during which your veterinarian is available to address any concerns you may have so you feel comfortable knowing you're making the right choice for your pet.

Customized Anesthesia Protocol

To ensure the health and safety of your pet during surgery our Birmingham veterinary team utilizes a multi-parameter monitoring and anesthesia system that reflects the highest principles and ideals of quality care. Prior to surgery, your pet is examined and a pre-surgical blood screen is performed. The results of these tests along with your pet's past anesthetic history, breed, preexisting conditions, and age are used to create an individualized anesthesia protocol.

<? echo $title; ?>During surgery your pet is cared for by a highly skilled, experienced veterinary technician using our monitoring system, which tracks blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature and oxygen level. We also have a warming system that carefully maintains your pet's body temperature during the procedure.

Comprehensive Pain Management

We all know pain hurts, but pain also has many other detrimental effects on your pet’s body. Pain slows healing, decreases activity and causes behavioral changes such as aggression, anxiety and depression. Pain can worsen diseases like arthritis and potentially some cancers.

As part of our commitment to keep your pet comfortable, we practice the most up-to-date and comprehensive pain management protocol. For surgeries as well as for acute and chronic conditions, we use all our available and safe resources, including opioids, local anesthetics, NSAIDs (non-steroidal medications) and oral and injectable analgesics for the complete comfort of your pet.

Responsive Postoperative Care

Following surgery, all patients are kept warm and comfortable and are closely monitored to assure the right start to the healing process. The amount of time your pet will need to be monitored after surgery varies. In some cases animals will need to be monitored overnight; in others, they can be sent home the same day.

When your pet is discharged from the hospital, we will provide you with detailed information on how to properly care for your pet at home after surgery. If any questions arise after your pet returns home or at any other time during the postoperative period, call us. We are happy to do all we can to ensure your pet's full recovery.
